From Salesforce’s chief ethical and humane use officer, a prescriptive guide for how to integrate AI into the workplace effectively.

AI technology has rapidly advanced from automation to generative tools to autonomous agents. Business leaders are increasingly excited about the potential of AI but also worried about the risks. At a time when AI can both radically increase productivity and set off a PR nightmare, where can professionals turn for tactical advice that cuts through the hype?

Manage the Machine is a practical guide to effectively and responsibly integrating AI into work, in business domains ranging from sales to corporate strategy to HR. Paula Goldman, chief ethical and humane use officer at Salesforce, shows how to get the best from AI and people working together, with examples from leading companies like Walmart, Grubhub, and Nike. She provides clear guidance for determining which tasks can be safely delegated to AI and where humans should take the lead—for example, by articulating when customers welcome AI, and when they find it inappropriate. Goldman also lays out the guardrails necessary to keep AI—or the humans using it—from going astray.

As humans increasingly work side by side with AI, Manage the Machine provides the road map for organizations to take their next steps with confidence, putting people at the center of the transformation.

  • “I've spent my career at the intersection of capital and conscience. Manage the Machine gave me hope — and a roadmap — for why the leaders who invest in people in the age of AI will be the ones who win.”
Darren Walker, Former President, Ford Foundation and President & CEO, Anonymous Content
  • “Paula Goldman keeps humans at the helm of the AI transformation, where they belong. Manage the Machine is a balanced, practical guide that shows leaders how trust, structure, and the right guardrails are what get the best from people and AI working together.”
Nita Farahany, author of The Battle for Your Brain: Defending the Right to Think Freely in the Age of Neurotechnology
  • “The leaders who figure out how to use AI to unleash their people, all of their people, will build an edge that's hard to replicate. Manage the Machine cuts through the noise and is the blueprint for how to do it right.”
Cristina Mancini, CEO, Black Girls Code and Founder and CEO, Beyond Code Collective
  • “AI is the most transformative technology of our time — but its true impact will be defined by how we shape the partnership between humans and machines. Manage the Machine lays out a clear roadmap for how businesses can harness AI's immense potential while keeping trust, creativity, and human judgment at the center. It's an essential guide for building an AI future that drives business value and expands human potential.”
Marc Benioff, Chair, CEO & Co-Founder, Salesforce

Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, CEO, Xero and author of Choose Possibility
  • “Too much of the conversation about AI focuses on the latest model release, and not nearly enough on how leaders should actually wield it. Manage the Machine fills that gap brilliantly: a practical, human-centered guide for the moment we're in.”
Baroness Martha Lane Fox, Co-founder, lastminute.com
  • “A practitioner-oriented guide to how AI is changing knowledge work, deeply reported and grounded in real case studies.”
